Psychoeducation in counselling – how can it help you?

What is psychoeducation and how do we us it in counselling? What is it’s purpose for you as a client?

Psychoeducation is a tool very commonly used by counsellors and therapists as a way of giving their clients a better understanding of the mind-body connection, and how this can manifest in a variety of ways. This might include bringing the client’s awareness to the physical symptoms of their anxiety, such as increased heart rate and breathing.

By educating clients about this, the client can gain more power over their responses and reactions. It can help to manage feelings of shame around not being “able to cope”. As a client, you should expect your therapist to help you to understand these elements of yourself, and to help you to find ways to manage this for yourself.
